Quakers Lane Surgery Tel: 01748 850440

Who is the service for?

Anyone within Hambleton Richmondshire and Whitby who is pregnant – planned or otherwise.

The patient will need to confirm their pregnancy by test at home. GP practices do not provide pregnancy tests so please advise the patient to buy one from the pharmacy or supermarket.

How to access the service

Is the patient pleased about their pregnancy?

Then they’ll want to start their ante-natal care and will need booking in with the Community Midwife in the usual way (follow your practice protocol). They do not need to see a GP.

Is the pregnancy unexpected? Is the patient unsure what to do and wants advice/support?  Give them the details for BPAS (British Pregnancy Advisory Service).

The patient can self-refer and BPAS will book them in with an advisor on the phone or in one of their many clinics to talk through all the options available to the patient to help her make the right choice for her.

Again, the patient does not need to see a GP.

Any information given to BPAS will not be shared with her GP unless she consents to them doing so, so if they decide not to proceed with their pregnancy, nothing will be documented in their main GP medical record unless they give consent to BPAS to share with their GP.
